History
1846
Born in 1846, Joseph Mark Turnell moved to London from Cambridge to become a grocer’s assistant. He married his landlord’s daughter Annie and eventually saved enough to open his own fruit and vegetable shop at 5A Garrick Street, Covent Garden.
He gained notoriety for the quality of his offering and service and soon after opened another premises on 18 New Street.
1938
In 1938 Turnells received the Royal Warrant as fruit and vegetable supplier to The Royal Household and the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII. By this point, Turnell supplied many luxury hotels around London, as well as being pioneers in the popularisation of frozen food in the 1950s as the country recovered from World War II.
1988
Covent Garden Market was moved to Nine Elms, and this coincided with Turnells’ purchase by Hillsdown Holdings (now Premier Foods, one of Britain’s largest food manufacturers).
Turnells, now an iconic brand was regularly depicted in cartoons drawn by Jak (Raymond Jackson) for the Daily Express and Evening Standard.
1994
Turnells was purchased by Rodney Thakrar who continues to own and run the company today.
1996
Under Mr Thakrar’s stewardship, Turnells has supplied the United Kingom’s Ministry of Defence in the Falkland Islands, Iran and Afghanistan
2021
150 years after its founding, Turnells continues to meet the specific needs of London’s largest organisations with innovative approaches to food distribution
